About Sociosights Press

Our Mission

The mission of Sociosights Press is to publish award-winning books that fulfill the company's motto: transforming society, one story at a time.

How We Got Started

Sociosights Press was founded at 2:00 am on a cold February evening in 1998 at the now defunct Kinko's copying shop on Bee Caves Road in Austin, Texas. Founder Debra Winegarten was working with her mentor and book designer, Anne Singleton Blocker, finishing the company's first book, "Strong Family Ties: The Tiny Hawkins Story."

As they were putting the finishing touches on the book, Anne turned to Debra and asked, "What's the name of your company?" Debra thought for a moment and said, "Well, I want it to have something to do with sociology and something to do with insights...I know, Sociosights!" And so Sociosights Press was born.

The Publisher

Publisher Cindy Huyser succeeded Debra Winegarten as publisher of Sociosights Press in 2018 after Debra's untimely death from cancer. Huyser is a poet in her own right and has worked as an editor with Sociosights Press since 2014.
